Thumbs up Hello

Have just found the site, looks good so far. Does anybody have any interest in the Waverley route? particularly between Hawick and Carlisle. Would be interested to hear about it.

Have just read the above and was interested to learn that you lived in Enfield as I did. My father in law was licencee of the 'Goat' at Forty Hill, and I lived in Baker Street, my next door neighbour was a driver at Enfield Town station on the N7's. I dont suppose you were the fireman that came into Gordon Hill one sunday morning on a V2 and let a young lad look over the footplate! Happy days!
That turn you described must have been a backbreaker, but I suppose it was the way things were done then.

Hi sirvisto68 I was a regular at the " Goat " in the late1950s early 1960s The govenor was called George I think his surname was Giddies or something like that, George was a good bloke and every Sunday he put on a huge bar buffet. Can you remember your next door neihgbours name I might have worked with him when I was firing a Enfield.

I never stopped at Gordon Hill on a V2 so it was not me who allowed you on the footplate. And yes most days were hard work on the ECML but it got a lot easier with the advent of diesels cheers for now.

Alan,
Not quite sure if I am doing this right, but here goes anyway,my parents in law were at the Goat from 1953 until 1962, Wally and Dora Reid, I think the George you are talking about was there from 1967 until 1974 [this from 'Pubs of Enfield' not my memory] and yes, what a spread he used to put on for a sunday, if you did not get there by 1205 you missed out and his name was Tozer [wife was Maisie]. My next door neighbours name was Vaughn and he was definatley at the 'Town'. I have just retired from BA after 38 years as a steward and have joined the Swanage Railway where I hope to train to be a signalman although, looking at the manuals it will be a stretch for the grey matter!

Hi sirvisto68
I may have got my dates mixed up about the landlord of the "Goat" pub the name Tozer is correct. The only driver I knew called Vaughn at Enfield had been taken off driving due to bad health he worked in the oilstores and he had a son called Fred who also worked at Enfield shed, this was in early 1954 when I first started on BR
