New noise policy could mean major bills for railways.

People move house near to a railway & then complain about the trains.
It's like the townies who move to the country & then moan about church bells, cocks crowing, sheep bleating & the smell of cow dung.
What planet are these people on................................................ URANUS?
I live just over 50 yards from thr "Midland Main Line" & I hardly notice any noise even with the back door open.

Oh dear. Just had a horrible thought. If they send one of their inspectors on any day of the year, there will be an enourmous chance that there will be a steam special on the same day. How will it be if suddenly the chap is nearly deafened by Cromwell or the like?
That won't help us. I do think though if people live near railways they should be prepared for the downsides as well as the upsides if there is any of the former.

I lived in a bungalow right across the road from St Blazey good yard when it was busy 24hours per day and i didn't have a problem with it i would rather hear trains than noisy neighbours anyday.

I used to live facing the freight avoider at Holgate Junction in York, and it was most comforting when you could hear the trains, even the class 60 hauled Jarrow Tanks that used to sit at the signal near my window was never a problem. The only restless night I had was when the Railgrinder was shuttling past one night!

I remember once, when I was working for Nexus (Tyne & Wear PTE) the metros were being diverted along a little used line around past the road entrance of South Gosforth depot, this very short peice of track passes a row of houses and is normally used by the odd ECS or engineering train. A resident of this street called up to complain saying "why are your trains using an illegal line", "we cant get any peace" and during her rank I heard a furious male voice shouting "theres another one going past" and "tell them I'm going to our MP"

Solid noise reduction barriers have been going up all over mainland Europe.
In Switzerland it is quite common for glass panels to be inserted at the request of local residents who still want to see the trains.

A train(child) should be seen and not heard.

House Shakes

My back garden backs on to the Liverpool Street-Cambridge mainline. The electric trains are no problem but the heavy goods trains shake our house foundations as they pass. After living in the same house for 35 years we have got used to the house shaking.

i moved in to a house next to the manchester vic ashton line[then a transpennine route],all we could hear was trains passing,it didnt bother us tho,,then it seemed quieter, must of been 87 as transpennine were transfered to man picc, nan and grandad lived next to line at miles platting bank at collyhurst, when i visited in the 70s you could hear the old diesel engines thundering up the bank..it didnt bother them,a friend lives in pendlebury on the manchester wigan via atherton line, apparently the house[old terrace]used to shake and the noise was screeching wheels,[142s use that line say no more]when man vic rails were re laid late 90s that section of railway was also replaced before tunnel near bolton road, friend says she hardly hears trains now except for blowing the horn before the tunnel, think its down to the maintenance of the track, personally i would pay extra for a rail view, but im biased
