Business and a county council demand 90-minute journey times on the London to Norwich rail line under a new franchise.

I agree totally about the need for more comfort, reliability etc but is faster speed really that critical to the economic wellbeing of a particular region? If it is achieved what will these high powered businessmen do with the extra 10 or 20 minutes they have gained and who will pay for the undoubted extra costs that that will be incurred due to the investment that will be required?

Surely, the important thing is that the rail journey should be competitive with other forms of transport (ie is the train the quickest journey?) and in cost. I imagine that even at present the answers are "Yes" (except by private jet or helicopter) and "No."
