Guard sentenced.

The railway guard who gave the right away to a train at Liverpool has been sentenced to 5yrs imprisonment for manslaughter. Apparently a girl was leaning against the train when the signal was given to the driver to proceed, this resulted in the girl falling between the platform and the train, i don't know any more details ---- does anyone know the finer details of this tragic story.

I was on a Merseyrail train this morning at Ormskirk and a driver and two per-way guys were talking about it when the driver changed ends. The link above to the report is more or less what they said. Tragic story and one wonders what she was thinking getting off at James Street while her friends were still on train, I assume she probably got on the station before at Central, and thought they had gone under the Mersey and reached Hamilton Square in Birkenhead. We will never know. Merseyrail run nearly 800 trains per weekday and according to reports this the first such incident they have had.

I think the comments after this article speak volumes. The girl, the barstaff, her friends and her parents are all guilty to some extent but it's the guard that's made the scapegoat. Another example of our crazy legal system.
