In the early hours of the morning I sometimes hear a heavy sounding freight going south on the Midland main line, that's almost three miles away! There's no way you can stop the noise of trains being carried on the breeze unless you put all the rail system in tunnels. I don't hear it in the daytime due to road traffic on the A512, if that's minimal you can hear the roar from the M1 a mile up the road. At times the whole lot of 'em are drowned out by the roar of aircraft taking off from the East Mids Airport 5 miles north of here. Oh, and we have a University less than half a mile away. Just DON'T get me started on the subject of noisy students!!!!

In the mid-60's, on a quiet night, I could hear the Hampshire 'Thumper' DEMUs travelling between Portchester and Fareham - FIVE MILES AWAY! I thought it was a nice sound!
