Unhappy Boy dies at Allerton Rail depot

It would appear that he touched the overhead wires, according to the Transport Police

It would not be necessary for him to actually touch the wires. We were taught that the voltage in the overhead line can arc up to 14 inches. Hence no fire irons or slacking pipe were allowed to be used when running under them, for obvious reasons. What a waste of a young life, but he shouldn`t have been there.
Regards Mike. ex Saltley fireman.

overhead line can arc up to 14 inches.

We are now taught that the current can arc 9ft. So in the event of an incident then until we are assured by the ECO (electrical Control Officer) that the power is off you don't go near it.

Yup! I'm just trying to square this in my mind with the rail tracks that I see in Europe with NO fencing! Walkways and cycle tracks alongside, I've even seen pedestrian crossings in Germany laid with sleepers across tracks from a Council estate to the Town Centre! ......and no-one is daft enough to get killed!

Me-thinks that perhaps the average British psyche just isn't up to the challenge........
