Soldiers & regiments

I'm new here and this is my first proper thread so forgive me if it's on the wrong forum.
I have a query about where to find something. What I'm looking for, if such a thing exists, is a list or at least some of the names of of diesels & electrics
(1960 onwards) that have or had the names of regiments or types of soldiers, for example, The Irish Fusilier, The West Yorkshire Reigment. etc. In other words those that currently have, those that have been renamed and those that have been decommissioned or scrapped.

Also interested in earlier locos with such names, but primarily post-steam locos/units

Thanks

James

try this link for a start

http://www.uktrainphotos.co.uk/55names.htm

then check out the links at the top of that page - class 45 etc

for steam engines - look for named Black 5 (about 5 of them), LMS Royal scot classes & patriots for starters

Thanks Robbo.

Very helpful. I didn't realise the Deltics and even moreso Class 45 had so many such names. An ideal starting place, thanks again.

James

Locomotive Names by Jim Pike covers Locomotive names up to 1999, steam, diesel and electric listed in Alphabetical order. You need to know the name you are look for, but it is very comprehensive: An Illustrated Dictionary!

It is now being remaindered in the UK so can be bought quite cheaply.

Best wishes,

John H-T.

Thanks John. I'm not looking for a specific name or loco though. As an ex-soldier myself (RAF Regiment) I'm interested in general in the application of military names to locos.

In my research over the last couple of days I've detected two units with the same military name, namely, Royal Anglian Regiment.

One is class 86 diesel/elec loco 86246

The other is 90012.

From what I understand the "One" unit 90012 was given the name as part of a programme of reapplying the old names that were lost when the old units were scrapped, in this case class 86 - 86246.

And it was named on my birthday last year http://paulbigland.fotopic.net/c1412207.html
