Hello from the North East!

Hi everyone, Larry here. I was never into trains as a kid, never did the 'I want to be a train driver when I grow up' thing but as I've got older I've found myself interested in history, and have always had a sly fascination with mechanical things and wish that I'd took an interest in engineeering when younger. I used to live in the midlands but now I live in the north east and I find myself drawn to the old steam trains of yesterday, and having been to York recently I'm hooked! I dont find the modern diesels or electrics at all interesting really, was never a train spotter but I just think those old trains are fantatastic!
Nearby is Shildon which houses some fine old chuffers, as qwell as our own railway museum here in Darlington! I'm a bit gutted as circumstances meant I missed the outing of the new Tornado, which came here earlier this month! I've been reading about it in Steam Railway magazine.
You can see some of my train pics here http://stumm47.deviantart.com/gallery/#Vintage-Trains
Also i have a photobucket page which I will post pictures too as I get them. I am really new to trains though so a lot of the jargon goes over my head-just getting to grips with stuff like 0-4-2 wheel designation etc so bear with me!

Hello and welcome!! I just answered one of your other posts and a quick search I could not answer the other about the green Shildon based loco.

Best bet, is to have a poke around Wikipedia as it is a mine of information on basic railway stuff, so you can catch up on the jargon and brief history as far as you like!

And of course folk here will do what they can to help you grasp the finer points!

Should be plenty of second hand books that fit your needs on your local preserved railways, and getting one from there means you're helping preserve the heritage as well!
