Mileage help.

Hi,

My first post here and I wondered if anyone can help.

I have the old Miles and chains books (all five) and until recently I have been on with getting my mileage etc.

With St. Pancras International (First Capital Connect) station opening I wondered if any one knew the distance in decimal (or miles and chains) between the new station and the following stations?

Farringdon.
West Hampstead Thameslink.


Also with the new station at Mitcham Eastfields the distances between thre and Streatham and Eastfields and Mitcham Juntion?



Also with new spurs and lines opening up maybe anyone who knows these bit of info could post them here to help others.

By miles and chains books are your refering to something like Quail maps?

Would the next London Area book "due September/October" have these updates? Sorry, I dont know a great deal about it

It seesm to be a 1MB pdf file, which allows you to zoom in. What is nice is that it highlights new and old lines but unfortunatley only for southern half UK.

I haven't ever looked at the atlas' in the past. I might take a look in Motorbooks in October time.

The old Miles and Chains books are very old about 1988 I think.

How about taking a satnav with you on a train journey. It might go barmy and tell the train to take the next right etc. but it should tell you speed and distance travelled - and set it to required units ie miles / kilometers etc it could help

I probably didn't make sense (as usual ). The 1MB map wouldnt answer your question, but I thought it might be useful to others. I have kept a copy myself.

I think robbo's GPS idea is probably the best quick-fix for your question.

Hi everybody, I just surfed in here.

As I'm sure you know, THE defining book of what goes where on the railway is the Sectional Appendix. Unfortunately neither Mitcham Eastfields nor St Pancras International Low Level have appeared as new inserts for the SA yet (well not my copy anyway). When I get the chance I'll have a look at the latest Periodical Operating Notice and so long as they're still in there I'll post the mileages on here.

In the meantime the best I can do is tell you what you probably already know.

1) Eastfields Level Crossing is located at 9m and 19ch. Since this lies bang slap between the up and down platforms it could possibly be defined as the position of the new station, but I'll confirm when I can. Streatham is definitely at 7m 48ch and Mitcham Jn is at 10m 30ch.


2) Kings X tunnel extends between 1m 59ch and 2m 56ch. Obviously St Pancras International Low Level is somewhere in between. Farringdon is at 0m 62ch and West Hampstead T/L is at 3m 73ch.
