Unions welcome daily trains call (BBC News)
Network Rail plans to allow trains to run every day of the year, its chief executive Iain Coucher says.

As usual the BBC is inaccurate and careless. They've only mentioned the RMT union in their article, and yet they entitled their article "Unions...." in the plural.
This asks more questions than it answers. The majority of traindrivers are in ASLEF, and its omission from this is ominous.

I cant think that doing all track maintenace and renewals at night is the best solution. Night working slows down the speed of work, and vastly increases the costs. Off site prefabrication to "speed up work" is a very old idea and the fact that it is being suggested as the solution is very worrying, and implies that those doing the PR Spin have no idea what they are talking about
Doesn't London Undeground do re-sleepering work at night, and the avarage rate of progress is two sleepers or about 1m of track per night. That is:-two hours to set up the workplace, only two hours actual work possible, and two hours to clear the site and get everything approved to hand back to traffic.

The thing is in this day and age they should be on top of all this work but they wont spend the money.
Plus if it the railways werent in the mess that they are in now then the tracks wouldent be in such a state. On the Merseyrail Southport line they shut it down for a long period but there wasent mutch difference in the ride quailty of the trains. Because the trains are too old too overlaoded al;l because they waste money on silly security gaurds instead of investing in the tracks and proper Police Officers. "Bring back proper commnity bobies i say"
