Trains disrupted by explosion at Elephant & Castle

An explosion and subsequent fire in commercial premises located in the arches under Elephant & Castle station has closed the line between Blackfriars, Denmark Hill & Herne Hill. The London Fire Service had reported that 10 Fire Engines & 70 Firefighters attended and found three commercial premises, four cars and a telephone box well alight. A later update reported that the fire was now under control.

Still under investigation (or at least not yet reported) I believe. But an article for The Telegraph website includes this quote from a London Fire Brigade Station Commander:

Station Commander James Ryan of the London Fire Brigade said that two people - a member of the public and a police officer - had been injured and treated for smoke inhalation.

But later the London Ambulance Service confirmed six people ended up being treated at the scene, with one being taken to hospital.

“At the moment, five people left the railway premises, which is a car repair and garage there. Four males and one female. One of the adult males is being treated on scene for smoke inhalation. But there was nobody else involved.

“The source of the fire is under investigation at the moment. We will be working with the police and with the fire investigation team, but at the moment that is not known.

“There's no concern at the moment that anyone is missing. The fire is being brought under control as we speak.

“There’s a couple of cylinders, or at least one cylinder, that has been identified in there, which will be in the process of cooling before we can declare it safe and move out.

“We've currently got 15 fire engines about 100 firefighters on scene. And we're looking to scale that back as soon as we possibly can. We will try and scale back and remove some of the fire engines and allow some of the key roads to reopen in probably the next hour to an hour and a half.”
