Steam train buffer

Hi everyone!

Does anyone know if a traditional steam train buffer stop would be all black? Or red? Currently working on a set and need to distress this wooden buffer and want to get it the correct colour!! Please see photos!

Hi there CCG, and welcome to the forum.

I reckon the word 'traditional' covers just about anything. Theses things evolved on an ad hoc basis, so unless you are trying to emulate a particular line or company, you could style it pretty much how you fancy.

Googling for images under 'rail buffer' produces lots of tired looking ones.

My favourite colour scheme is..... 'rusty frame, with oil patches'.

This sort of thing made out of old rails....http://www.semgonline.com/infrastr/pics/im_buffst-1.jpg

Best wishes, BW

Actually I thought I'd include a picture of my local 'stops'. They are unusually garish.

I expect they made them this colour so that train drivers can't claim they didn't see them.

Seriously though, the restaurant is located immediately behind, so if you overran the stops you'd be scattering diners all over the station.

I wonder if Bramleyman recognises where this is ?

Best wishes, BW

I was confused by the photos showing 9017 'Earl of Berkeley', but clearly wasn't at the Bluebell. It has all become clear as the Bluebell Railway's facebook page shows 9017 on display at Goodwood for the Goodwood Revival event.
