The Mythbusters for anyone who ever watched it covered "Peeing on the third rail" several times and found it to be so unlikely that it was considered implausable. The pee breaks up in the air and as such does not carry the current unless your member is rediculously close to the actual rail.

So...he's either so stupid it should be considered suicide or science failed.

He was probably electrocuted because his leg came into contact with the third rail whilst having a pee. I think the good old British media has tried to create this image of him deliberately peeing onto the live rail to spice up a tragic but all too common accident.

At Kings Cross I once worked a goods train to High Barnet, it was my first week working at Topshed after transfering from Enfield. Our engine was an N2 0-6-2T and we were running over London Underground Lines which had the third rail.
My driver on that day was driver Holman and he told me under no circumstance's must I pee out the side (as was normal on the footplate) Whether it would have killed me or not I'll never know as I did no peeing. Myth or not I don't know about that.

And yes Dave passing a heap of hot clinker just after some idiot had pissed on it was very unpleasant.

Ha ha... I have been the victim of "hot clinker pee" a time or two. For anyone who has not experienced this...Its AWFUL!
I was instructed on the Southern that if you need to pee ... Shake it about to break the stream. If a FULL bladder was released there would hardly be any gaps in the stream and hence the currant would run up the said stream. (look next time you come home from the pub)

There is no way the splash from pee could electrify you, however, like has been said, it is possible to have a constant stream of wee, some small nasty bugs can even swim up it into you body!!!

Some years ago, I worked in a cast iron pipe producing plant, and have been the victim of the peeing on hot metal gang. The smell cannot be believed, and as the others have said, will remain firmly embedded in my nasal passages for ever.
As for our friend who electrocuted himself on the third rail, it was probably the smell of his hot urine that killed him.
Paul.

What an interesting subject!
Not railway related but in 1969 I was on road tankers and as i had no vehicle of my own I did hol/sickness cover. One day I had to take an AEC MK3 8 wheeler and work out of BP Chemicals at Saltend,Hull. The wagon belonged to "Shekky Les" and after a few miles there was a strong smell of piss(can I say that on here?).
I found out off another driver that "Shekky" didn't like stopping so he used to pee in a bottle whilst driving and empty it down where the ratchet handbrake gaiter was on the floor, straight onto a hot oil-smeared engine. This, combined with a hint of diesel and gloves covered in what you were carrying last like Acetone etc. made for an interesting combination.
The fitters were forever freeing the mechanism off as it was always seizing up!

What price H and S in them days?
