Hi Marie, I would read as many books as I can and visit as many railways as I can. What is your main intrest, is it steam, electric, diesel or some other part of the railways?

I might suggest visiting the local library and see what they have in the railway section.
Becoming more familiar with railway companies (new and old) in the area you live can be very interesting, finding out where lines used to be before they were closed for example. If you have a bias for a particular area (steam, diesel, electric, dmu, freight etc) then concentrate on that to start with.

If you live anywhere near York the National Railway Museum is a great way to explore the history of railways - including new developments.
Many good magazines available for different strands the railway world. The Railway Magazine is still probably the best for all round interests though.

It is possible to obtain old photos (as modern reprints i.e. developed from the original negative). Pretty much every station that ever was is covered.
There are numerous railwayana enthusiasts who provide this wonderful service. The Transport Treasury have the biggest range. They sell by photographer. (If you like a particular photo in a book, check the acknowldgement at the side of the photo or in the rear of the book and you'll see who took the photo and it's a reasonable bet that you'll be able to get a reprint.) They only cost about 80p - £1 so it's an affordable hobby.

Welcome to the Forum, Marie. I see you've already had a number of replies pointing you in the right direction. As you're in Penrith you're near the main London-Glasgow route, of course, which has loads of trains day and night. If it's the modern scene that interests you, just spend some time at the railway to see where your interest takes you. Carlisle nearby is a great centre of activity.

You could check out the local or farther heritage sites and become an active volunteer. Plenty of jobs to do, not all dirty!
