New Ipswich curve.
According to Railway Herald the new curve to allow Felixstowe freight to go cross country (without reversing in Ipswich) will be built as double track to cater for increased capacity in future years.
Seems it's cheaper in the long run. Has common sense prevailed ?

The new curve has to be seen in conjunction with the routeing and gauge upgrading of Felixstowe services to Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and Scotland via Peterborough and Nuneaton. Thus freeing capacity in the London area. The London paths will be taken up by the now under construction London Gateway port on the Thames when it is commissioned.

It does make a change to see some bold investment planning strategies instead of skin-flynt tactics to save money and drive down costs. A couple of years ago it would definitely have been single track and lump it!!!

London gateway looks mighty impressive doesn't it ? Its not too easy to see the railhead on the attached but it looks to be the favoured method of moving containers to and from the port. I guess a few hundred thousand containers turning right and going through North London in addition to those from Felixtowe was always going to be too much for the available capacity hence the extra line at Ipswich as said above.
Does anyone know if some of these intermodal services from London Gateway will go down the crossrail line ? http://www.pla.co.uk/siteimages/port...eway(full).jpg According to the excellent film on the DP world web page its going to be the UK's busiest railfreight terminal. Its probably worth a separate thread in itself. Last edited by Pesmo; 22nd August 2010 at 23:46. |
