Hi Everyone

While I was a trainspotter in my teens, my renewed interest has come from inheriting a few thousand photos of trains, trams, ships, planes and buses from my father in law. I also create mosaics from photographs as a hobby. So I am now putting the two interests together and hoping to find people with photo collections to work with.

Hi boilersuit
First you need lots of digital images. I recovered my collection from a rather poor condition collection of slides, negatives and prints that had been stored in cardboard boxes in a damp garage for 20 years. So lots of scanning. Then you crop squares from the digital images to be the 'tiles' of the mosaic. Then you use software which tries to match your tiles with whatever main picture you choose. That gets you to your first draft version!

OK that makes sense. Quicker than cutting up hundreds of photos with scissors and then putting the pieces together with tape...
