Cab Rides

In 1964 when I was working at Birmingham Snow Hill, I was given a cab ride in the Blue Pullman to London and back. To a twenty year old it was just fantastic.

I have worked on Rhodesian Railways Class DE2, DE3 (both EE) DE4 (Brush) and DE6 (GM). The DE4 was the most comfortable loco to ride. The DE6 was the noisiest. The DE2 & DE3's were just run of the mill locos. There was 2 DE5's which were railcars, but I never drove, or had a ride in them.

Had quite a few cab rides, like a class 60 on the North an West dropping rail between Newport (Gwent) an Shrewsbury that was a long shift also been Hereford to Dee Marsh a few times on 60's an 66's with steel coil an return with the emptys, also my favorite Class 37's an 66's on Auto ballaster work between Hereford an Shrewsbury an of course the Tampers, Ballast Regulators an Stoneblowers all over the place like Craven Arms to Pantyffynon (The Central Wales Line), Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth/Machynelleth to Pwhelli, Shrewsbury to Crewe an Shrewsbury to Wrexham. All on locos an on Track Machines an now i get to cab ride the machines anywhere i'm working in the country. As an when i can get the chance.

I have given a few cab rides over the years, i dont think i would do it with today's railways.
I Remember i took one old boy (who owned a scrapyard in Redruth) to Penzance and back on a freight train he was over the moon and it kept the car going with spares for years.
Happy days
ccmmick.

Unfortuntely, I've had so many cab rides over the years that I can't remember each and everyone!

I do, however, recall my first ever cab ride and that was 37038 at the East Lancs Railway in September 2000. It was my brother driving (payed £10 for a driver experience thing-a-ma-bob) and I went along for the ride!

Admittingly, 90% of my cab rides have been at the ELR with the odd one or two being on another preserved railways. The ONLY mainline cabride I had was in a DVT between Macclesfield and Stockport! 86259 was the loco 'shoving' on the rear.

The last cab ride I had was 40145 at the ELR in March (on the back of a train from Heywood to Bury with 50008 at the business end). The driver, was feeling rather lonely sat at the back on his tod so I kept him company! lol

I rode 'Up Front' as we termed it, on Class 47's and then Class 317's when Road-Learning to become a Guard in 1990.

Steam wise only got one footplate ride and that was way back in the 70's on the K&WVLR on a "school" trip we (the school railway society) organised as a history outing the loco was the American Austerity tank 72 (30072).
Also at MR Butterley with the "help" of grand son was managed to get a cabride
on 0-6-0T 3F Jinty 47357

Diesel
Barrow Hill Shed Open Day 1972 (I think may have been 79) where there was 08 and 03 cab rides
Whilst not a ride at the same event I cabbed Kestrel a 20 and a 37

The present conditions brings back a memory of weather induced chaos on the Manchester-Sheffield Midland route many years ago. Standing in a wedged unit on the way back from Manchester I was very surprised when the Guard asked me to follow him and he invited me to use the drivers seat in the rear cab! No idea why he picked on me.
