Smile Lost passion

Hi everyone

I recently retired from playing in rock bands and now have the time to dedicate to a long lost passion, RAILWAYS! My interest was re-ignited afer discovering (completely by accident) the Severn Valley Railway last year whilst touring around. I came across Bridgenorth on my way to Telford, stopped there for a couple of nights and spotted the station! I was down there like a flash and .... well you get the picture.

Anyway, I am after advice on steam railway DVDs and books to buy as there seems to be millions out there. I am also intersted in the early diesels to a degree. If anyone can reccommend any I would be chuffed! (boom boom ).

Thanks and Best Regards

Blaman27

This is my reference for diesel locomotives.

I got mine when I was a member of the railway book club. Don't know if it's still going ?

PS

I see there is an updated edition of this book, mine only goes up to class 60.

Welcome to the Forum blanman27.

I recently borrowed "Cast of Thousands" by Adrian N Curtis from my next door neighbour, who is heavily into Westerns. Brilliant book and that is from someone who is not really into Diesels!

Best wishes,

John H-T.

Hi Blanman27 and a warm welcome from me too.
There are so many good reference books and you are right to say choosing is a difficult one. I have found over the years that reading railway magazines they do some great book reviews and I follow my heart as to what pleases me. Having a good rummage through the many railway book shops and stalls at most heritage lines will also bring up some good interesting stuff. A good start I found was from WH Smiths who do some really informative Bookazines that are not too expensive. There is one that is describes the many heritage railway sites in the UK with a breakdown of what is best and worst about each one. Useful if you intend to visit them all!
Anyway good luck with you newfound hobby and enjoy as we all do.
All the best
Phil

Do you have an interest in the more technical aspects and the period of Britsh Rail modernisation of the fifties and sixties?

If so I really recommend those made by British Transport Films many of which have been republished as collections on DVD.

Massive choice.
I have The Illustrated History of British Steam Railways by David Ross. first published in 2004. ISBN:978-14054-8290-5.Cost you about £20 but well worth it.

I have sent Blanman two private messages. No reply. Perhaps there is a fault with the system?
I have many books on steam - all regions which I would be happy to pass on.
Perhaps if you read this message and are interested you could contact me via PM.
Thanks.
