Kenya train crashes into homes

Several people have been injured by a freight train that crashed into homes in the Nairobi slum of Kibera.

There were fears that scores of people could be trapped in their homes.

Wishing a speedy recovery to the victims. One of the problems in the third world is that there is no town planning and therefore people tend to build their shacks on any open ground, even if they are dangerously near to some or other activity...oil pipelines, airport approach paths etc.

What 27vet says is correct - it is a while since I visited both Kenya and Uganda, but all railway tracks that I saw were in appalling condition. It is surprising to me that there are not many more of these type of incidents with poor track and "houses" built so close to the rails.
