I thought that these 37's were engaged on work for the ETRMS system? Certainly not a works train, that's the "New measurement train" which continually works it's way around the system checking track-line & level, alignment etc.

The above train with the 97's on is Radio Survey 3. This is used to check radio reception and is being used over the cambrian testing the signal strength for GSMR for the forthcoming transfer to ERTMS signalling.
Network Rail use differant types of trains for differant reasons. The NMT does high speed track geometry testing along with other tests. The UTU do ultrasonic rail testing. Mentor does overhead line testing. Plus others -TRU/TIC/TRC/etc. Which all do some type of testing or other. |

Hello all,
Well i heard from a very reliable source that the first part of the Cambrian Line to be switched over to the new ERTMS system, is going to be from Dovey Junction to Pwhelli an all the rest is staying RETB for now. An the biggest problem Network Rail have is that the lience for the RETB system ran out back almost two years ago an its costing them loads to keep it in place. An another interesting snipet of info is that whilst testing the ERTMS system between Shrewsbury an Machynylleth where NWR have relayed the track with steel sleepers it automaticly brings the train brake in an stops the train. The other thing being that the maximum lenght of steel sleepers for ERTMS is only about half a mile in length an i know there is a section of about 4 miles of continous steel sleepers in several places.
