New Diesels (or Not) 70012

Hi Everyone, i suppose you have all heard the news about new freight loco 70012. Whilst being unloaded off the ship was dropped by the crane from some considerable height and as far as i have heard the insurance company have written the whole loco off as scrap, oh-er. (perhaps it should have been numbered 70013 - unlucky for some). Bit of a shame though. Does anyone have any further information about its future?

There's lots of talk about this
Some were saying it was going back to the States etc but it is on a low loader somewhere in the Midlands
it's like 70009 the gossip was it had a seized wheelset but the photo in the gallery clearly shows it live haulingthe other dead three on 0m25

The chassis of 70012 has been bent look at the picture http://martinturner.fotopic.net/p68663398.html
It would be very hard to repair that damage! Must have left quite a dent where it landed!

As an insurance write off and with the cost of storage, I bet, based on the current scrap prices it'll be cut up post-haste and sold to China.

I would have thought they could take it back to the factory strip it down and rebuild the parts on the nexr chassis
I was reading it is constructed on a unit basis so they could reconnect the bogies engine and control equipment on the next chassis

Possibly. But it came down with a hell of a thump, and all its parts will have been affected by the shock. Every single component would have to be completely stripped down and rebuilt to be sure it was OK to re-use. Probably cheaper – and safer – to scrap them and start again.
