How many 08 shunters left on the network ?

Chatting to a friend the other day, when we started train spotting in 1979 there were about 900 08 shunters in service.

We have lost touch with the modern scene and are too lazy to check, but what with freight lost to the road and modern freights we were wondering how many 08's are left today ?

Can someone enlighten us please ?

A huge amount have been scrapped.
I think that there are around 50 in preservation in various places and around 15- 200 left around the network and private yards.
I think it is something like that anyway.

There are still quite a few I reckon. I've seen two today, one at Longsight TMD was still in BR blue.

I remember back in 1979 that Leicester LR was allocated 10 08 shunters.

There were still lots of sidings and the big marshalling yards, and loose freights with guard vans, but sadly that changed very quickly indeed !
