Churnet Valley Railway closed after washout

The Churnet Valley Railway has had to close following a washout of some of the track, after a period of torrential rain had caused a breach of the adjacent Caldon Canal near Consall station.
As a result, Saturday's planned 'Super Power' event was cancelled - this would have featured THREE USATC S160 class 2-8-0s (residents 5197 & 6046 with visiting 2253) in action together for the first time in preservation.
The railway's management intend to reopen at the end of November after carrying out repair work.

Thanks for the link Tony.

That would really have been quite a sight. I didn't realise that we had 2 large US locos in this country.

Hopefully they can run the event successfully in Nov.

The repairs have been carried out ready for the railway to reopen this weekend in time for the Santa Season.

Hi BW,

There are at least 6 of the USATC S160 class 2-8-0 preserved in the UK:

5197 & 6046 based at Churnet Valley Railway with 2253 on loan there as well at the moment (5197 & 6046 are going on loan to the Telford Steam Railway for their 'Polar Express' trains)
5820 is also in traffic at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway
3278 is at Tyseley for overhaul
1631 is under restoration at the GCR(N), Ruddington.

The Churnet Valley Railway is hoping to re-run the event featuring 2253, 5197 & 6046 in February before 2253 moves to it's new residence at Dartmouth Steam Railway.
