Smile Cross Rail

Can anyone please tell me why the existing 'termini' proposed are Maidenhead and Shenfield? What on earth do they connect with?

Welcome to the forum!
I read somewhere that there is a planned extension from Maidenhead to Reading which has not been passed by parliament yet (?)

Shenfield end would connect with the existing services to Harwich and Southend.

Anyone else have any more info?
