Channel Tunnel workers suffer carbon monoxide poisoning

Nineteen workers have suffered carbon monoxide poisoning while working overnight in the Channel Tunnel, with one of them in a serious condition, French officials have said.

The incident happened as some 60 workers were changing rail tracks on the line between Calais, France, and Folkestone, UK.

Why no CO detectors? No respirators either. Back in the 70's we all carried respirators when working down the pit. It was the norm. Converted CO to CO2 which allowed time to escape.
Perhaps they should bring back Canaries!!!

Is the tunnel concrete lined? Perhaps its wasnt expected. What precautions are taken in other tunnels? Will there be a RAIB report?

Interesting question. I don't know whose jurisdiction this comes under.

RAIB only investigtes UK rail accidents, and this might be outside their remit. (The Channel Tunnel has its own set of Rules, separate from UK Railway Rules).

As always, time will tell.

I guess, since the workers were taken to a French hospital, it happened nearer that end, so it will be the French equivalent of the H&SE.
