More or Less Smelly

I worked mosty on steam as a fireman on BR. In my early days at Kings Cross I only worked as secondman on diesels occasionally. My first day as a secondman was on a Sultzer on "The Cambridge Buffet Express", the other diesels I worked on was DP1 (The Prototype Deltic) & Type 4 EEs.
As I quit BR in the early 1960s my question is, as dieselisation progressed were newer locos more crew friendly i.e. less fumy. I remember sometimes the fumes in the cabs in those early diesels could be fairly strong.
