Man vic- york.
Last time I was in Manchester victoria, I was there to see the help for heroes. While I was waiting I saw a few 158s destined for York. Are 158s usually used on this service? (PS: the trains started from manchester)
If this is the case then I may begin to use them instead of first transpennine 170s from piccadilly. Both trains pass through leeds, so at a guess the routes join up after Manchester. Oh yes why am I going? To see what has replaced Mallard in the NRM.  Ta very much SFE

It's usually 158's but it takes longer to get there via Northern / Victoria IIRC.

there are only 2 trains per day to york from man vic mon to fri,theres 3 per hour heading to leeds,one slow 144 via brighouse,another via hebden bridge also a stopper usually a 155 or 158,then theres the semi fast to selby again either by 155 0r 158 via hebden bridge bradford etc,this route towards leeds and all points east is my favourite as it passes through some lovely towns,it adds 20/30 minutes to your journey tho,whenever there is a york train at man vic its usually a 3 car 158 0r a 158/153,sorry to bore you but i read somewhere that the caldervale line is the most used on the northern network.

Transpennine doesn't use class 170s to York - it uses class 185s like just about every other service it has. [ Class 170s are used on Hull service I believe ]
Personally I would rather travel on a 185 than a 158 - unless you object to Transpennine in principle or overcrowding (not too bad usually). Northern services goes via Rochdale, Hebden Bridge, Halifax and Bradford. I'm sure it's a valid route, so you could always change at Leeds.

I don't mind the 185s, but the seats are a bit firm. I think I'll stay with transpennine then. Thanks everyone.

I have to admit I quite like 185's..
Bright, roomy, attractive, clean, and - being over 6ft 5 - EXCELLENT LEGROOM! The only problem is they're always so bloody overcrowded!
