The electrification of the Bidston - Wrexham Central line is interesting. Wrexham - Bidston DMUs used to terminate at Birkenhead North, and on Sundays, extended to New Brighton, maybe when they get round to it, a through Wrexham Central - New Brighton service will again be possible, although the main destination will probably be Liverpool Central.

This line is crying out for improvements to be made and electric trains would certainly be welcome. I wonder if the Welsh Assembly would contribute towards it's electrification as they generally don't seem very interested in improving links to England?

I can't really see any justification for having a separate HS2 branch right into the city centre for what, presumably, wouldn't be any more than 2 trains per hour ? Better if they share the existing tracks, which aren't fully used from Edge Hill outwards.

As far as Edge Hill - Lime St goes, I seem to remember when the city loop was built in the 1970s there was talk of eventually extending it to Edge Hill to link up with (and electrify) the Huyton line services. I think they even built some stub tunnels for this ...

Something does need to be done about this section, because it can take forever to get into Lime Street !
