Welcome to the Forum and I hope you find it interesting.
Steam trains in Cumbria for photographing sites:- Any of the side roads that lead to the Main West Coast Line, and of course the Settle and Carlisle line your nearest point being Appleby area. The best way to obtain imformation about trains(steam) on these lines is via The website :- UKSteam.Info. The only private Railways with steam are The Lakeside and Haverthwaite at the southern end of Lake Windermere, and the narrow Gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale railway . Hope this is useful to you. Look out for steam specials through Carlisle.
Its my favourite rail station in the UK. Lots of railway history there - they do a ghost walk in the Summer all about the station.

The North West is quite a hot spot for steam with the West Coast Main Line, The Settle-Carlisle and the Cumbrian Coast. Should see quite a bit!
Best wishes, John H-T.
