The problem is the difference in altitude.

The original idea was to go down the west of the Matlock gorge.

And old diesels are not noisy ? And diesel "clag" is worse for your health than steam.

Surely the noise is part of the attraction, unless one is an electric fan.

Personally, if it ain't steam, I don't want to know. I won't even leave the house to see a diesel - let alone pay good money to travel behind one.

Alas, physical and cultural differences would prevent a physical link-up but I do have an alternative.

Both Wirksworth and Idridgehay are now destinations in the national ticketing database. If Peak Rail added Darley Dale and Rowsley South too, then perhaps a hypothetical 'Derbyshire Dales Ranger' ticket could allow travel between the two railways via the EMT service between Duffield and Matlock?

Just a thought.

Well the Sherwood Forester is changing AGAIN

departs Kings Cross (not St Pancras) at 0900 and travel along the East Coast main line to Grantham, then Nottingham and Derby to Matlock and Rowsley

hauled by 70000 Britannia (not 70013 Oliver Cromwell)
the train will stop at Holme Junction to take on water apparently

Published timings are
London King's Cross dep09:00 arr21:30
Stevenage dep09:50 dep20:30
Peterborough dep11:20 dep19:50
Matlock dep13:00 dep17:20
Rowsley arr13:30 dep16:40

Prices
Premier £199 gives Full English Light Lunch and 4 course dinner
First £129 gives morning coffee and Danish pastries and afternoon tea and biscuits
Standard £84 gives a reserved seat at a table for four.


Anyone got enough money for two tickets TO London then a decent two on this train I haven't not sure how they will accommodate Wheelchairs anyway

Most if not all MK1 coaches in preservation have spaces in a converted carriage for Wheel chair use all the one I have been on anyway.

unfortunately couldn't afford the two tickets got to get from Chesterfield first then back after but thanks for info about MK1's I know MK3's have space do MK2 open stock have them too

Hi gents,im new to this particular forum but was pointed this way by colleagues as some technical aspects of the Matlock connection were asked ,if i get a chance later on il update the posting with some better information though if youre after the details of how Matlock will work then theres already some long write ups on the NAT PRES forum regarding working into Matlock.

the key items though i think youre after answering are;

1.we will work into the disused platform.
2.as you rightly say NR arent keen on propelling anymore so top n tail is most suited.
3,we will use our own riverside as the siding for this loco ,why pay for all the works associated with altering matlock at great expense when you have it already.
4. you can either run in and out top and tail on santas with no uncoupling,top n tail with normal services or if you add five more minutes to the service,drop the original loco back onto the front of the train and leave the shunter there at riverside,through some permissive shunting operations on our side.

hope that suffices a breif explanation, most of the signalling is now in on our side,just the box to errect and the rodding run to drop in place,around 27 jobs to complete before the box can be brought into useage.
