What type of locomotives does USA use?

Hi,

I was talking to a few friends today and the discussion of how many percentage electric/diesel locos were used in USA came up. If anyone knows (or has an idea) would you please enlighten me?

i.e. 30% electric 70% diesel?

I don't know the exact figures, but I would have thought that the 30% electric would be a little on the high side. I think that the only area of extensive electric traction is in the north east of the country, but I could well be wrong!
