Why no Rail Station in Plattbridge (Wigan)
I ltake the Line from Wigan Wall Gate out to Manchester and I see that by using the Raod Transport on a Sunday that Just about every area in Wigan has a Railway Station but yet Platt Bridge no Longer Has its Station for which I do not ubderstnd why it was closed aprt from the beeching act as it is a good walk to Hindley and or Ince as if you walk down from where I live towards Ince Station your as well walking into Wigan TOwn Centre.
It really is DIabolical I know there is atleast one brirge missing but is there anything else to stop them re laying this line and re instating a few of the defunct stations or they could BUild a Station just down the road at Spring Veiw where the west coaqst mainline passes throgh and past a Railway Goods Yard pleanty of land there also a station re instated at Golboune would be nice too. |

Hi John,
The reason why there is no station in Platt Bridge is probably because there is no railway!!! The Tyldesley to Wigan main line through Platt bridge was closed in 1969. The rails remained in place from Springs Branch to Bickershaw Colliery until the colliery closed about 1994. Look at a map of the area or find a copy of "A Lancashire Triangle" by D.J.Sweeney and you will see that any reopening is totally impractical. |

The locals would probably nick it.
Spent a very long weekend there in the 70s recovering tram rail from a cobbled street, with the intention of relaying it for the trams at Steamport Southport. We had to replace the cobbles as we lifted the rails as part of the deal. We left site about 20.00 on the Sunday at 06.00 Monday the lorry turned up to pick up the 8 x 60ft rails. Nothing to be found. |
