Is this an early diesel train?
This little chappie is at Shildon whenever we go there-I presume its still actively used.
It has a chimney like a steam loco but is it a full blown diesel? I notice the 'modern' BR logo! It carries the number 03090 |

The British Rail Class 03 locomotive is, together with Class 04, one of BR's most successful smaller0-6-0 diesel-mechanical shunters. The class, numbering 230 examples, was built by British Railways' Swindon and Doncaster works in 1957-1962 and numbered D2000-D2199 and D2370-D2399 (later 03004 to 03399). D2370 and D2371 were used as departmental locomotives and originally numbered 91 and 92 respectively.
You can find all this and more if you search in Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, or if you write BR Class 03 into a google search.

We have two beautifully restored examples of these great little locos at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway near Derby, working the push pull service on our 1 in 30 incline: D2158 built at Swindon in 1960, in green and 03084 built at Doncaster in 1959, at present in blue but in the process of a repaint into green when it will run with its original number D2084.
I am rostered to drive D2158 on the incline on Sunday 14th September. |

I loved the old Class 03/04's. We used to have quite a few of them allocated to Botanic Gardens. And I saw the very last 04 in regular service (2217) at Stratford in the early 1970's. We used to call them 'Sugar Puffs' as they bore a resemblance to a loco used in an old cereal advertisement...so I'm told!
