Ah, your not alone, I had this problem when I first used TRAINZ. Ive got TRAINZ: the unltimate collection, so it might be different on newer versions.
Anyway. Go onto the track feature box on the surveyor (where you can select track, signals e.t.c) there are 3 menus:
Tracks
Signlas
Tracker
Go to the tracker menu where there is a choice of a red triangle or a green cross shaped box (its called the trigger but I don't know what that does), but select the red triangle and click on a part of the track, where the triangle will appear on the track. Then save it, and when you load up the map on driver mode then you will see that triangle on the map, you can select a train on that triangle. Then load up the game and see your train on the map
