Hi J4Y,
Just to answer your questions;
1. Old enough to have shaky hands and failing eyesight.
2. Since your grandad was a lad.
3 Usually buy in shops, you get a better idea of what you are buying and you can compare kits.
4. Mostly OO but have built N in the past.
5. Mainly London Midland.
6. Card kits. I particularly like Metcalf kits. They always fit together well and look good when finished.
7. Definitely card flat pack, they usually look more realistic.
8. Depends on how flush I am and which building I need for a particular purpose.

May i suggest that you buy a Metcalf kit for around £5. Study how the flatpack is laid out on the sheets. Carefully assemble it and note how the bits fit together and the corner tabs are located. Take your time and you will end up with a miniature building that you can be proud of. You will also gain a great deal of insight into your graphics module.
P.S. I was a CDT teacher in another life.
