I have very fond memories of the 101s. As a young kid in the early 70s my dad would take me from Edinburgh Waverley over to Fife via the Forth Bridge and the units were always 101s. This was in the good old days when you could see out the front and watch the driver. The units did have a very distinctive smell which was a curious mixture if metal, upholstery and diesel fumes. The units of today just seem to totally lack any character of their own.
