Tony, having spent some time in India, I would say that the majority of that vast country is that it is slowly clawing it's way into the 18th not 19th Century. There are some modern parts, but there is also a huge amount of squallier and poverty. On one late evening, three of us from Bristol walked back to our hotel about 300yards. we counted over 60 people sleeping on the pavement or the ground where there was no pavement.
