At 6.50 tuesday morning a freight train derailed in the tunnel between Stockholm S and Stockholm C. After derailing it hit two steel pillars supporting the tunnel during the construction work.
A commuter train going in the other direction was stopped in the tunnel but later reversed to Stockholm South where it was evacuated.
All trains were cancelled and passengers had to use the underground (Metro) to go to other parts of Stockholm where the trains still were running.
The delays spread to other parts of Sweden (for example Gothenburg and Malmö) and in Stockholm the light rail and metro systems had to cope with more passengers than usual.
Later trains to Gothenburg was rerouted north over Västerås.
At 19.00 it is planned to let the commuter trains pass the accident site and later regional and national service will follow.
The derailed train will be moved in a couple of days but full train service can't be expected until next week.
A couple of months ago it was reported about poor track maintenance on this particular stretch of track and voices is now raised and later this evening the Minister for Infrastructure will be questioned about this in a debate in the parliament.
