We (my immediate family) used to travel between Johannesburg and Durban on the overnight train every year from since when I can remember early 1960s until the late 1970s, some sections of the line were steam. Most memorable occasions, impeccable service and well kept and maintained carriages. Always had a good night's sleep and even now, if I have insomnia I play a repeating recording of the sound inside a railway carriage. My last train journey of that nature was probably in the mid 1980s. Have a look in my gallery. There are still a few trains running these days (The Blue Train for instance) but veeerrrryyyy dear.
