I might suggest visiting the local library and see what they have in the railway section.

Becoming more familiar with railway companies (new and old) in the area you live can be very interesting, finding out where lines used to be before they were closed for example.

If you have a bias for a particular area (steam, diesel, electric, dmu, freight etc) then concentrate on that to start with.
