A couple of years ago we visited Cromford to watch the pump in action,
It is most impressive to see this big engine and such close quarters as it quietly goes up and down pumping I think something like 5 tons of water per stroke. We walked up the incline later but only went a little past the foundations or engine house of the winding engine. On a later expedition we did get to Middleton top but did not enter the engine house which was in operation that day as I was more interested in the old boilers outside. I am not sure how much of a 'layout' there is left there but seem to remember some wagons and other bits and pieces. I think we might be due for another expedition there this year but it is a bit of a jaunt from South of Peterborough and a day with good weather is really needed. I do not think if we do go that another hike up the incline will be included in the plans.
But what a marvellous view on the way up.
