I think your Grandad was right and he caught a direct train probably in the evening (late afternoon)from Hartlepool to Middlesborough then via Saltburn and Whitby Westcliff to Scarborough (reversal) and on to Filey Bridlington (arriving around 7-50 pm) and Hull Paragon. In the dracula film made in the 80's the station master at Whitby calls out the stopping places for such a train and I checked the timetable afterwards to find that there was indeed a Hartlepool to Hull train at least once a day. The coastal portion contained through carriages from Hartlepool. It probably had fish vans attached at the rear.
