It happens on most preserved lines unfortunately, there's a report that a complete 4 car ex-southern region EMU will have to be scrapped due to the amount of damage caused by metal thieves at the Churnet Valley Railway. At Chasewater a few years back a complete loco frame from a very historic diesel shunter was stolen overnight, last year 5690 Leander had a load of copper piping nicked while it was parked at Quorn overnight awaiting movement to Loughborough. The Midland Railway Centre reported that a load of carriage door handles went overnight. It's not just the preserved lines that suffer, there was a report some months back that the police nicked a bunch of thieves who had removed a load of copper parts from class 47's parked up at Gloucester depot.
