Transpennine doesn't use class 170s to York - it uses class 185s like just about every other service it has. [ Class 170s are used on Hull service I believe ]
Personally I would rather travel on a 185 than a 158 - unless you object to Transpennine in principle or overcrowding (not too bad usually).
Northern services goes via Rochdale, Hebden Bridge, Halifax and Bradford. I'm sure it's a valid route, so you could always change at Leeds.
