i moved in to a house next to the manchester vic ashton line[then a transpennine route],all we could hear was trains passing,it didnt bother us tho,,then it seemed quieter, must of been 87 as transpennine were transfered to man picc, nan and grandad lived next to line at miles platting bank at collyhurst, when i visited in the 70s you could hear the old diesel engines thundering up the bank..it didnt bother them,a friend lives in pendlebury on the manchester wigan via atherton line, apparently the house[old terrace]used to shake and the noise was screeching wheels,[142s use that line say no more]when man vic rails were re laid late 90s that section of railway was also replaced before tunnel near bolton road, friend says she hardly hears trains now except for blowing the horn before the tunnel, think its down to the maintenance of the track, personally i would pay extra for a rail view, but im biased
