A lot of these style of trains work with through multi-working. This allows the rear loco to be powered by the front loco.
There is a need on a lot of these trains to keep the loco running to keep the brake timing in the same and also to allow the compressors running to aid keeping air pressure. It also speeds up the reverse move in not having to shut one loco down and start the other one up, especially where only 4 minuites are given in many cases to swop ends.
