Hi Philip,

The Deltic engine was a highly strung beast which on a regular basis used to throw "a leg out of bed" ie a piston through the crankcase, this with other design issues made it easier to repair out of the loco,so when there was a problem the defective unit was lifted out and a spare dropped in, all in an eight hour shift if I remember correctly. So hence the reason for a few engine changes each year, I'am not aware of this being carried out on any other class though.
