The problem with DMU's is that most, if not all do not have sanders.
An 03 propelling a 108 trailer car has never failed to get up the incline at Wirksworth (The steepest standard gauge passenger carrying line in the UK, overal 1 in 30. steepest 1 in 26).
We did have to set back for another go at the incline last Sunday on the first Santa Train with our two car 101 Met Cam, but as I said, no sanders! Made it second time! If it really got to be a problem we always have the Class 20!
