They're known as Ultra Bright LED signals, and it's a very apt description. So in answer to your question, no they don't merge. In fact IMHO two yellows can be distinguished from a further distance than on the older colour light signals. Unfortunately though for the same reason when you get close to them at night it feels like your retinas are melting

(And as a little bit of trivia, the bottom set of LEDs are angled downwards so that you can still see them when you're passing underneath them, just like the older light signals had a fresnel lens wedge).
