I think Stobart's decision to form its own railfreight company is good news for Britain's railways but the concept of road hauliers being involved in rail operations is already well established in Switzerland.
HUPAC, the Swiss intermodal operator is currently celebrating its 40th birthday and was founded before Eddie Stobart had even entered the road transport industry.
72% of HUPAC's shares are held by road hauliers and it collaborates with various Swiss and other European rail operators. It owns 4425 wagons, 13 locomotives and operates about 100 trains per day in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Poland, Holland and Denmark. HUPAC's trains convey containers, swap bodies, semi-trailers and complete lorries.
